Salutations

Oh, hello there. You’ve made it to the start line. This start line is a marker in the journey on which you have already embarked. A journey that you did not choose, one tinted with the all too familiar word: cancer.

I don’t exactly know what to make of this blog nor what will come of it. However, I hope that it can be a fountain of conversation or, at the least, an estuary, where my stream of consciousness reaches the vast sea that is the AYA cancer community.
Here, I will share my journey as a twenty-two year old graduate student, living with metastatic cardiac angiosarcoma. Some of my publications may just be short blog posts that capture my current emotions and open themselves up to conversation. Others may be more extensive articles that detail my lived experiences and meditations as a young adult with cancer.
This is a space of reflection. For me, yes. But also, for you.
My desire is that my words resonate with you in some way, that you sit down at the end of a long day, read these words, and feel heard. I want you to know that you are not alone.
You have made it to the start line. Whether your bittersweet relationship with cancer began years ago or you received news of the disease’s unwelcome arrival today, you are about to embark on a new path of community, reflection, and advocacy.
Unlike most start lines, this one has no finish. The bounds of this community extend beyond the limits of our breath. The connections and progress made here will inspire future generations to advocate for proactive and preventive care, cancer research funding, and community education.
Our words will live on as an example of human connection, writing, and art as forms of healing.
I invite you to read my words and to write your own. Write freely without fear. Connect with fellow writers. All I ask is that you are kind.
This blog belongs to you, to us.
Let your voices echo onward, my friends.
Sarah
